Supporting Children with PANS/PANDAS: An Orthomolecular Approach

Supporting Children with PANS/PANDAS: An Orthomolecular Approach

Orthomolecular therapy uses high doses of essential nutrients to support the body’s natural healing processes. For children with PANS/PANDAS, Vitamin C as Ascorbic Acid and Niacinamide (B3) play pivotal roles in managing inflammation, supporting the immune system, and aiding detoxification.

Key Components of Our PANS/PANDAS Protocol

1. Vitamin C as Ascorbic Acid is essential in our protocol for its potent antioxidant and immune-supporting properties. Here's the suggested dosing approach:

  • Initial Dosing: Dissolve 1-3 grams (1,000-3,000 mg) of Vitamin C powder in 4 oz of water, offering this every 15-30 minutes. Continue until the child shows signs of stomach discomfort or a soft bowel movement. If a soft bowel movement hasn’t occurred within 30 minutes, give another 1-3 grams until it does.
  • Continued Dosing: Once soft bowel movements have stopped, administer 500-1,000 mg every hour until approximately 5 pm.
  • Adjusting Doses: On Day 2 and beyond, divide the total amount used on Day 1 into several smaller doses. Gradually decrease the dose as the child’s bowel tolerance adjusts, as loose bowels indicate detoxification progress. Ideally, reduce to a low maintenance dose of about 1 gram per year of the child’s age.
For chronic infections, Liposomal Vitamin C may be beneficial, with 1-5 grams per day as an optional addition.

2. Niacinamide is a no-flush version of Vitamin B3 that supports mood regulation, inflammation management, and cognitive function. B3 helps manage neurological symptoms by providing support for energy production in brain cells, helping ease symptoms of PANS/PANDAS. Dosing guidelines by age:

  • Ages 1-6: 250 mg three times per day
  • Ages 7+: 500 mg three times per day

3. Flax Seed Oil, rich in Omega-3s, supports neurological and immune health. We recommend 1-2 teaspoons per day for anti-inflammatory benefits and improved brain function.

4. Magnesium supports relaxation, reduces stress, and aids in detoxification:

  • Dosing: 1,000 mg per day, divided into smaller doses. Consider our Mag Defense Powder for ease of dosing.
  • Additional Support: Transdermal magnesium spray and Epsom salt baths can further soothe the body and promote a calming effect.

5. Lecithin assists liver function, supporting detoxification of pathogens and other toxins:

  • Dosing: 1-3 teaspoons per day
  • Additional Options: Dandelion root tea is a gentle liver support option that can complement lecithin.

Additional Recommendations for Holistic Wellness

High-Potency Multivitamin: Provide a daily high-potency multivitamin to fill any gaps in essential nutrients (see our orthomolecular multivitamin powder).
Calming Essential Oils: Apply Lavender and Chamomile oils topically to promote relaxation.
Lifestyle and Dietary Tips:
  • Avoid toxins: Limit exposure to dyes, chemicals, and sugar to minimize inflammation.
  • Hydration and Whole Foods: Encourage water intake and a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods to nourish the body.
  • Encourage Relaxation and Positive Thinking: Practices like breathing exercises and gentle mindfulness can help regulate stress responses.
  • Chiropractic Care: Chiropractic adjustments may improve physical alignment and nervous system function.
